Chinese – First Year (FL) 

This is an elementary course offering the beginning student a background in listening, speaking, writing and reading in Chinese. Oral communication ability in Chinese will be stressed. A cultural study of Chineses will be stressed. In terms of the writing ability, students are required to master over 100 characters. In terms of communications, the topics include greetings, introducing family members, understanding friends, asking friends out for dinner and so on.

Chinese – Second Year (FL) 

This course is a continuation of Chinese 1. It includes a more sophisticated level of conversation, grammar of Chinese. The students are required to be able to write over 200 characters and be able to communicate in Chinese regarding topics like making appointments, shopping language, talking about exams, evaluating a Chinese class in Chinese.

French – First Year (FL) 

This is a foundation course offering the beginning student a background in oral and written French.  Vocabulary building will be stressed as well as elementary grammar, reading, and composition.  A cultural study of France will be included.

French – High school third year (FL) 

French 3 is an in-depth study into being conversational in the French Language.

Students will learn advanced structure, vocabulary, and usage essential to everyday conversation, short stories, epic literature, and history.  Upon completion of the, the student should be capable of sophisticated conversation in French.

Short readings will augment the reading in the basic text.  A cultural study of the countries that speak German will be included as well as a fast glimpse at German history.

German – Third Year 1010/1020 (FL)

German 3 is a launching point from German 2 into being conversational in the German language.  The students will learn advanced sentence structure and vocabulary essential to everyday conversation.  

Course Details 

Reading and understanding of short stories will be emphasized.  Upon completion of the course, the student should be capable of sophisticated conversation in the target language. Upon completion of German 1010 and German 1020 students will have earned 8 college credits.

Spanish – First year (FL)

Spanish first year is an introductory course designed to get students to the Novice Mid level of proficiency in the Spanish language (ACTFL Proficiency Standards, 2012). Spanish – Third Year 1010/1020 (FL)

The main objective of Spanish 3 is to enable students to continue to attain a measurable degree of communicative competency and proficiency in each of the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Cultural topics will also be learned in the following areas: history, customs, traditions, and lifestyles of Hispanics in Spain, Latin America, and North America. This is a concurrent enrollment course. Upon completion of Spanish 1010 and 1020, students will have earned 8 college credits.

Spanish Dual Language Immersion 5 (DLI 5) (FL)

Spanish DLI 5 is the equivalent of a 5th year Spanish course intended to prepare students for the Spanish AP Language and Culture Exam. This course curriculum is designed for students that have been in the Dual language program since elementary school.

Course Description

In this course, students will critically analyze and interpret works of literature and film in Spanish to explore contemporary societal issues.  Students will utilize interpretive communication skills (listening and reading) in order to speak and write in detail and in an organized way about events and experiences in various time frames, to confidently handle routine situations with an unexpected complication, and to share their point of view in writing and discussions on some complex cultural and historical issues.
