Recently there have been numerous cases of mononucleosis (also called "mono") reported in school aged children and youth in the Cedar City area. Mononucleosis is an infectious illness usually caused by the Epstein-Barr virus. Symptoms may last for 1-2 months and include fever, sore throat, swollen lymph glands, and fatigue. There is no specific treatment for this illness other than treating the symptoms (with rest, fluids, and pain relievers, for example). Complications and fatalities are rare. People become immune to this illness once exposed but carry the virus for life and can infect others. The main route of infection is through saliva and can be spread by sharing items such as drinks, eating unensils, toothbrushes, lip balm, and kissing.

The best way to prevent infection of mononucleosis is to practice effective hand-washing and avoid sharing personal items as mentioned. Stay home and cover your coughs if you become infected. Consult your doctor or health care provider for proper diagnosis if you think you've been infected.
